Mallard's professional career off to a hot start


PRINCETON, WVa.- Mason Mallard, a product of Troup High School and Louisiana Tech University, is off to a noteworthy start as a professional baseball player.

Recently signed as a free agent by the Tampa Bay Rays, Mallard is batting .290 (9-31) in his first 10 games as a member of the Princeton (WVa.) Rays, Tampa Bay's Advanced Rookie League team that plays in the Appalachian League.

Mallard, who played at Tyler Junior College before joining Louisiana Tech for his final two seasons of collegiate baseball, has a .436 on-base percentage and has driven in one run. He has walked six times and struck out seven.

In his last three games over the weekend against the Bristol Pirates, Mallard went 5-15 (.333).

Princeton is scheduled to open a road series tonight against the Burlington Royals.
