The New Summerfield Lady Hornets stepped up in class Tuesday night, but were still able to remain undefeated on the year.

The Lady Hornets paid a visit to Class 2A Winona and on the strength of Simone Derrett's double double (12 points and 11 rebounds), New Summerfield was able to edge the Lady Wildcats, 35-33.

Derrett is in her first season of varsity action at New Summerfield, after transferring from Rusk.

New Summerfield led 20-12 at the halfway mark, but a determined group of Lady Wildcats closed the gap to a single point by outscoring New Summerfield 14-7 in the third stanza.

The final period was a true nail biter, with the lady Hornets adding eight points to Winona's seven.

Stephanie Melendez scored nine points and pulled down 10 rebounds for the winners, while Maritzza Melendez also tossed in nine points.

Rounding out the scorers for New Summerfield was Ramie Weaver who chipped in five to compliment her four steals.

New Summerfield will put its 3-0 record on the line at 11:40 a.m. This morning when it takes on Oakwood in the first round of the New Summerfield Tournament.

The event runs through Saturday at Hornet Gymnasium.
