Prep tennis: Kilgore nips Tribe in season lid lifter

The Jacksonville High School varsity tennis team lost (11-8) to Kilgore in the first match of the fall season on Thursday in Jacksonville.

Jacksonville and Kilgore opened their respective seasons on Thursday at the Frances White Tennis Complex in Jacksonville where a highly competitive match unfolded.

The visitors were able to come away with an 11-8 win over the Tribe. The schools even played four additional matches to get as many players varsity experience as possible — each team won two of those competitions.

The Jacksonville boys won five of eight singles matches to account for a large portion of the Tribe's points.

Earning wins for Jacksonville was Alex Hassell (9-8 (1) over Jack Tyra), Will Royon (8-4 over Bryce Borders), Sergio Rivera (8-5 over Hunter Wilcox), Tavis Dosser (8-3 over Grayson Cavel) and Caleb Blakeney (6-3, 6-4 over Tanner Bennett).

In girls singles play, the Tribe's Katlin Gonzalez downed Cheyenne Jones, 8-6 and Haley George topped Madalyn Parrmore, 8-5.

The Tribe also claimed victory in three doubles matches.

Royon and Dosser pounded Borders and Bonnette 6-1, 6-4 in boys doubles, Gonzalez and Hernandez beat Jones and Parrymore 4-6, 7-6, (11-9) in girls doubles and in mixed doubles Jacksonville's Blanka Cornejo and Rivera stopped Wilcox and Chavarria 6-2, 7-6 (6).

Jacksonville was scheduled to host Corsicana on Friday afternoon. The results of that match was not available as of press time.
