BULLARD — Power lifters from Rusk and Class 6A Tyler Lee battled it out for first place in the Bullard Invitational on Saturday, with the Red Raiders edging the Eagles 34-32 to capture bragging rights.
In what was a highly competitive field at the top, host Bullard (27) took third, followed by Malakoff (25) and Frankston (18). Next was Troup with 17 points.
Eighty young men representing 10 schools took part in the meet, which was the second of the season for Rusk.
Three Eagles won first place in their respective weight classifications.
B.J. Johnson (181 lbs.) lifted a total of 1,185 lbs., Jackson Rogers (196 lbs.) pumped a total of 1,085 lbs. and Nick Aker (242 lb.) had success with 1,285 lbs.
In the super heavy weight segment, Garrett Blaylock lifted a total of 1,425 lbs. to come in second place and Jermaine Lewis finished third, with lifts totaling 1,365 lbs.
Sean Rogers also took third place, with lifts tallying 1,065 lbs. in the 181 lb. division.
Rusk's female lifters also represented well in Bullard on Saturday where they finished in fourth place in the team standings, with a total of 10 schools entered into the contest.
Fairfield (41), Bullard (29) and Malakoff (29) finished in front of the Lady Eagles, who amassed 21 points.
Troup came in sixth place, also having 21 points.
Valerie Ivy (105 lb) and Zoe Fields (114 lb.) earned gold medals for Rusk.
Ivy had lifts totaling 545 lbs., while Fields hoisted a total of 545 lbs.
David Lee Martinez (198 lb.) came in second place, lifting 805 lbs. of iron, and Kelsey White placed fourth in the 181 lb. weight class, with lifts adding up to 710 lbs.
