TAPPS 3A Golf State Tourney: Brook Hill boys lead after first round
FORT HOOD — Brook Hill owned a 2-stroke lead in the TAPPS Class 3A State Golf Championships after Monday's opening round of competition at the Courses at Clear Creek in Fort Hood. Brook Hill stood at 318 in the team standings, with Midland Trinity (321) and Baytown Christian (352) rounding out the top three. The Guard's Hunter Shattuck shot a white-hot 71 to take a four stroke lead over Curtis Morrow of Midland Christian and Beaumont Legacy Christian's Garrett James in the medalist standings. Also competing for the Guard were, Matthew Webb (90), Jeffery Yeager (83), Travis King (84) and Austin Savage (93). The final round was scheduled for Tuesday. The results of that round was not available as of press time.
Baseball 2A bi-district: Troup to tangle with Tatum
TROUP — The Troup diamond nine will take on Tatum in a best-of 3 Class 2A, Region II, bi-district series that is scheduled to get under way at 7 p.m. Thursday in Troup. The series will shift to Tatum for Game 2 (7 p.m., Friday) and if a third game is needed it will also be staged in Tatum at a time to be determined on Saturday. The Tigers of head coach Tell Ross will bring a 19-6 record into the series of games after edging Prairieland, 6-5, in a warm-up game on Friday. Ryan Powell picked up the win on the hill for the Tigers and also supplied a double. Each team had four hits and made five errors in the game. Troup is the runner-up out of District 18-2A. Tatum finished third in District 17-2A.
Softball 2A Area: Lady Tigers draw Central Heights
TROUP — After receiving a first round free pass as a result of winning the District 18-2A title, the Troup Lady Tiger softball team will open the Class 2A, Region II state playoffs beginning at 7 p.m. Friday when they take on Central Heights in the first game of a best-of-3 series. Game 2 is slated for 1 p.m. Saturday, and if a Game 3 is need it will be played shortly after the end of the second contest. All games will be played at Cushing High School. Central Heights routed Warren, 9-2, in bi-district play Monday night to earn a berth opposite the Lady Tigers.
Jacksonville High Sports Banquet set for Thurs. evening
The annual Jacksonville High School Sports Banquet will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday in the high school cafeteria. Tickets will be available at the door. All district, all region and all state performers will be recognized in all sports. In addition, several legacy and memorial presentations will be given.

Shayla Townsend of Rusk finished in eighth place in the finals of the 110-meter hurdles at the Class 3A, Region III Track and Field Championship, held late last week in Conroe. Due to a reporting error, it was incorrectly reported that Miss Townsend had qualified for the state track and field meet in a previous issue of the Daily Progress. Apologies go out to all, along with congratulations on a fine season to Miss Townsend.
