TROUP — Jake Smelser proved over the weekend that age is nothing but a number.
Smelser, who graduated Troup High School in late May, won the Hilltop Country Club Club Championship on Sunday, coming in at a 130 (36 holes).
Smelser, who has signed with Stephen F. Austin State University, shot 65 in each round to finish three strokes ahead of Brayden Maris (64-69 —133).
Taking third place was another former Troup High School golf standout, Peyton Hugghins (67-68 — 135).
Hugghins (130) won bragging rights in the Net A flight, with Smelser (131), Maris (134), Scott “Pup” Arnold (134) and Kent Powers (134.5) finishing close behind.
In the Net B flight Ed Leal ended up in first place, with a score of 134.5.
Other top scores in the flight included Kenny Stuth (134.5), John Eastman (137.5), Bill Arnold (139) and Joel Bisnett (139).
