Tribe Tennis: Gonzalez, Hernandez start off strong at Kilgore tourney

JACKSONVILLE TRIBE TENNIS

Tribe Tennis opened the spring season on Friday by playing in the Kilgore Varsity Tournament.

Katlin Gonzalez and Alejandra Hernandez gave Jacksonville its top finish by coming in second place in Girls “A” Doubles.

The Tribe tandem reeled off three-straight wins, defeating teams from Pleasant Grove (8-4), Center (7-6, 4-6, (10-9)) and Lindale (6-4, 2-6, (10-6) before falling in straight sets (2-6, 3-6) to a pair from Van in the championship match.

Two of the Tribe's doubles teams posted consolation bracket championships.

In Boys “B” Doubles play Will Royon and Mario Guerrero joined forces to go 2-2 for the tourney. The Jacksonville duo knocked off foes from Henderson (8-0), Center (8-2) and Van (8-1), after losing their first round match to a unit out of Lindale by a 5-8 score.

Lizbet Saldana and Isabelle Maiquez captured the consolation title in Girls “A” Doubles.

The young ladies from Jacksonville fell to Van (3-8) in the opening round.

After a second round bye, Saldana and Maiquez got on track and cruised past a Marshall duo (8-0) and outlasted a pair of Longview netters (8-6).

Meanwhile, Molly Bentoski and Caleb Blakeney finished in fourth place in mixed doubles.

The Tribe pairing won their first-two outings of the day, spanking a pair from Kilgore (8-3) and winning a marathon over Bullard (4-6, 6-4, (10-8)).

Bentoski and Blakeney lost to a team from Kilgore (6-7, 5-7) in the semi finals and fell in the finals to a Pleasant Grove duo (4-6, 5-7).

Saul Martinez came in fifth place in Boys “A” singles.

Martinez rang up victories over players from Longview (8-0), Pleasant Grove (8-1) and versus his team mate, Alex Hassell (8-3).

Martinez came up short in a match against Elysian Fields (3-6, 1-6).
