Troup girls win 16-3A cross country championship

Marigold Hunter of Troup, pictured during a race earlier this season, came in first place at the District 16-3A Cross Country Championships, which were held on Wednesday in Longview. Troup also won first place in the team standings, scoring 22 points, with Sabine (41) finishing second.

 LONGVIEW — Marigold Hunter, Sarah Neel and Danielle Puckett finished first, second and fifth place, respectively, to help send the Troup High School girls cross country squad to the District 16-3-A championship on Wednesday morning at LeTourneau University in Longview.

Troup, who is coached by Janna Lacy, tallied 22 points, followed by Sabine (41), Harmony (81) and Gladewater (85).

Hunter was the first to complete the 2 mile configuration. She won the individual gold with a time of 13:05.

Neel's 13:16 placed her in second place and Puckett froze the timer on 13:34, giving the Lady Tigers a trio of runners in the top five.

Meredith Howell (14:10) took ninth place and Hadley Derrick (14:27) ended up in 11th place.

Also competing for Troup, but not figuring in the team points was Valerie Guthrie (12th, 14:34).

A total of 24 runners took part in the race on the cool morning.

The Lady Tigers will next run in the regional meet, which is scheduled for Oct. 28 at the Jessie Owens Complex in Dallas.
