ELKHART — The Alto High School girls basketball team started its New Year's Eve celebration a little bit early this year, thanks to Mary Woodard.
Woodard drained a shot from the top of the key with about six seconds left in regulation that gave the Lady Jackets a thrilling, 31-29, victory over the Slocum Lady Mustangs (6-14) on the final afternoon of 2019.
Alto tied the game at 29 with around 27 ticks showing on the scoreboard clock to get the late rally going.
Mya Tyra fired in 16 points for the Lady Jackets, hauled in six rebounds and netted four assists.
Makayla Black scored five points and collected four caroms while Areli Perez-Ramos had a team-high 11 boards and two points.
Woodard finished up with three points and four steals, with Abbie Teutsch also scoring three points for Alto.
The Lady Jackets, who are coached by Jacksonville High School-product Sharae (Sanders) Schmitt, will take a 15-8 record into Friday's non-district game at Cayuga (13-9).
On Tuesday Alto, winners of six of its last seven encounters, dating back to Dec. 14, 2019, will visit Grapeland.
The Lady Jackets have amassed their 15 wins despite playing all of their games on the road. The Alto gymnasium was made unplayable as a result of tornadoes that struck the community in April 2019.
