FROST – Defending state champions and 2A DII's No. 3 Mart Panthers rolled through District 11-2A undefeated with a 40-7 win against the Frost Polar Bears Friday to complete the regular season.

While Mart finishes as the District 11-2A champs, Frost will be playing post-season football, too.  The Polar Bears will suit-up in Groesbeck against an opponent to be determined on Thursday at 7:00 pm.

Mart (7-3, 5-0) gained 202 of their 268 rushing yards in the first half.  The Panthers were led by RB Roddrell Freeman who had 181 yards on 7 carries for a touchdown.  Meanwhile, QB Kyler Martin completed two of three passes for 60 yards and a touchdown.

The Panthers scored four times in the first quarter for a 27-0 lead.

The Panthers took the opening kick and drove 48 yards on four plays.  Klyderion Campbell ran around the left edge for a 6-yard touchdown run and 7-0 lead.  After forcing a Frost punt, Freeman ran around the left edge and down the sideline for a 35-yard touchdown, 14-0.  Following another Frost punt, WR De Treavion Medlock caught a 45-yard pass on a post route from Martin, 20-0.

On their third offensive possession, Frost (4-6, 2-3) gained their initial first down when RB Ramon Manrriquez gained 13-yards on a scamper.  Manrriquez finished the game with 44 yards rushing on 10 carries, and he had six catches for 43 yards.  The Bears, however, were forced to punt once again.  One play later, Freeman raced 70-yards for a touchdown, 27-0.

Opening the second quarter, QB Tony Alvarado completed two passes to Manrriquez for 21-yards.  Alvarado completed 6 of 18 passes for 43 yards on the night.  The Mart defense stiffened.  On 4th down and 13 from the Mart 46-yard line, Frost tried a flea-flicker but Alvarado was sacked by Freeman charging up the middle.  Three plays later Mart’s Dillon Landry ran around the right edge, cut back to the seam, and dashed for the endzone near the right pylon for a 43-yard run and a 33-0 lead.

The best drive of the night for the Polar Bears came in the third quarter.  Frost used 11 plays to cover 60 yards and score.  After Manrriquez completed a 30-yard halfback pass to Korben Bowling on 3rd down and 13 from the Mart 40 yard-line, Manrriquez ran consecutive five-yard runs.  On the second run with 2nd and goal at the 5 yard-line, Manrriquez ran right behind OT Leopoldo Perez.  After a small gain, he sensed trouble and stopped.  Then he reversed and ran horizontally across the field picking up blocks from wide receivers before turning upfield along the left sideline for a touchdown, 33-7.

Manrriquez then caught Mart off-guard with an onside kick.  After nailing a ground-burner, Manrriquez sprinted behind the ball and fell on it 12-yards down field.

Mart, with DT Fernando Alfaro and DT Chris Bledsoe, put heavy pressure on Alvarado.  This led to Frost punting for the fifth time in the game.  Manrriquez soared a punt 39-yards that was downed by Christian Bryant at the 3-yard line.

Mart moved the ball 51-yards in six plays.  On the sixth play, Freeman powered 13-yards for a first down.  Leopoldo Perez hit Freeman as other Bears assisted.  Perez knocked the ball out Freeman’s hands and Salvador Martinez recovered it at the Frost 33-yard line.  On 3rd down and 4 from the Frost 39-yardline, Manrriquez attempted another halfback pass.  This one, though, was intercepted by Trey Powell.  He returned it 40 yards for the game’s final score, 40-7.
